Getting Your Confidence Back After Time Away From Training

Life doesn't run in a straight line, and neither does training. A new baby or an injury can pull you away from exercise for months at a time. So can a long illness or a hectic year at work. Sometimes there's no big reason at all. The routine just slips, and one day you realise it's been a year since your last class.

Going back can feel harder than starting the first time. You remember what you used to be able to do, and you're worried about how far you've slipped. You might feel embarrassed about walking in out of shape, or nervous that you've forgotten how everything works.

Those feelings are very common, and they're manageable. People who settle back in well after a break tend to follow a similar approach.

Start with the right check-in

Before anything else, think about why you stopped and if you need medical advice before you start again. This step matters more than any training tip.

Check with your GP or physio before returning if any of these apply to you:

  • You've had an injury or surgery since you last trained.
  • You've had a baby recently. Your GP or a women's health physio can advise on when and how to return, especially to higher-intensity work.
  • You have a heart condition or another ongoing health condition, including high blood pressure.
  • You're pregnant.
  • You've been seriously unwell, or you've been told to take it easy for any reason.

Once you've got the all-clear, pass on anything relevant to your trainer. Our trainers offer modifications tailored to each person. They can only adjust for things they know about.

Let go of your old benchmarks

One of the biggest confidence traps is comparing yourself to the person you were before your break. If you used to get through a full BBB class without stopping, it can be crushing to need breaks in your first session back.

It helps to treat your comeback as a new starting point. Your old numbers are a record of what you once did, and you can let them sit there while you rebuild.

Myzone can help here. It measures your effort against your own heart rate zones, so you can see how hard you're working today. A session that feels slower than it used to may still show you working at a solid intensity for where your body is right now.

Ease back in gradually

Australia's 24-Hour Movement Guidelines for adults, released by the federal health department, suggest starting with small amounts of physical activity and gradually increasing how often or how hard you train over time. They also note that working towards the recommendations brings some health benefit, even before you meet them. That applies just as much to returning members as it does to beginners.

A sensible plan for your first few weeks might look like this:

  1. Week one. One or two classes. Work at a comfortable pace and take breaks whenever you need them.
  2. Week two. Two classes if the first week went well. Start pushing a little harder in the rounds that feel good.
  3. Weeks three and four. Build up to the number of sessions you'd like to keep doing long term.

Expect some muscle soreness in the first week or two as your body readjusts. That's normal. Sharp pain or anything else that worries you is a reason to stop and get it checked.

Choose your first classes with intention

MPower runs four formats, and each one offers a slightly different way back in. Box is skill-based, so it's a good place to reconnect with technique without needing to go flat out. Build is structured strength work with coaching on form at every station, which suits anyone rebuilding strength after time off. Burn is high-intensity cardio on the bags and bikes. BBB combines everything in one session.

If you're unsure where to start, talk to a trainer. They can suggest a format that fits how you're feeling and what you've been doing. You can see all four formats on our classes page.

Tell your coach you're coming back

It can be tempting to slip into the back of the room and hope nobody notices you've been away. Letting your coach know you're returning works far better. They'll understand why you're taking a break between rounds and can suggest modifications before you need them. Most of all, they'll be glad to see you.

That small conversation also takes away a lot of the pressure. Once someone knows you're easing back in, you don't have to keep up appearances. You can take the lighter option in a round or sit out a minute without feeling that you need to explain yourself to anyone.

Set comeback goals that fit where you are now

Short, achievable goals help rebuild confidence quickly because you'll start ticking them off within weeks. A few examples:

  • Get to two classes a week for a month.
  • Finish a Box class without needing to sit out a round.
  • Feel comfortable with the standard combinations again.
  • Get back to a weight you're happy with at a Build station, with good form.

Each goal you hit becomes evidence that your comeback is working. Many people find that skills such as technique and timing return more quickly than they expect. Fitness takes a bit longer, and that's perfectly fine.

Be kind to yourself about the gap

You stepped away for a reason, and there's nothing to feel guilty about. What matters is that you're coming back.

If your time away came with low mood or a lot of stress, and those feelings are still hanging around, talk to your GP. Exercise can be a helpful part of looking after your mental health, alongside proper support. If you ever need to talk to someone urgently, Lifeline is available 24 hours a day on 13 11 14.

Your way back starts with one class

You don't need to be fit to start again, and you don't need to have it all worked out. One class is enough to begin.
